The Innovation Race

On Monday, June 6th 2011, CNN had a special presentation on innovation titled ‘Restoring the American Dream.’. It was hosted by Fareed Zakaria. I hope this is just the first in a series of programs on the same topic; American Innovation.

As an American, I found it very frightening but not at all surprising. I’ve been aware of this issue for quite some time. The signs are everywhere. Find something in your home manufactured in the USA.

One of the things that I found most disturbing was the fact that Apple, kings of innovation, employ 50,000 people yet 1 million Chinese fill the manufacturing jobs to produce Apple products. With that kind of model, only a small percentage of Americans will be involved in innovation and a huge amount of foreign workers will get the jobs to implement them. What good is innovation if jobless Americans can’t avail themselves of them?
